What size do I get?

May 12, 2020

At least once a week, if not more, I get asked what size rug to purchase or what distance a light fixture should be hung over a table, or an array of other sizing questions. I am going to try an answer as many of these questions as I can. If you have a question that is not covered in this – please comment below and I will try to get you answered.

Dining Rooms

  • Dining table chandelier should hang 66″ off of the floor. That should give you the appropriate height of 36″ above the table. If it is a countertop table or bar table just add 36″ to the height of your bar or countertop.
  • Dining room rug should be 24″-36″ wider than your table. That will give you plenty of space for the chairs to be pulled out and still stay on the rug.
  • The size of your table should allow for you to have at least a 3′ walkway from the table to the wall on all sides.

Living Rooms

  • When it come to TV viewing – the optimal height to hang or place the TV is 48″ – 60″ from the floor to the center of the TV
  • End tables in the living room should be basically the same height as the chair or sofa arm. It can be an inch or two lower but higher always makes for a strange transition.
  • An ottoman should never be taller than the seat of the chair that it is with.
  • Your rug should be large enough for all of your “sitting” pieces be able to at least be on the rug one-quarter of the depth. When you have odd living room sizes and it requires an odd size rug try these guys out… FLOR.com they allow you to buy your flooring in tiles so you can make it any custom size you want. Pretty amazing!

Bedrooms

  • A good size rug for for most Master Bedrooms with a King size bed is 8X10. I have included a chart to the side that will help with all sizes of beds and rug options.
  • Nightstands can really vary in width depending on the size of your room. But, measurements to keep in mind are try to match the height of the nightstand to the top of your mattress and don’t have a nightstand that is more than 24″ deep.
  • Lamps on nightstands visually need to be about 3/4 of the height of the headboard.
